NAFDAC Agency advises farmers against use of unapproved agro-allied chemicals on grains

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has advised grain dealers in Bauchi State to desist from using unauthorised agro-allied chemicals for the preservation of their grains.

The State’s Unit Head of NAFDAC, Mr Stephen Laiko, gave the advice on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi.

He said that the use of any unauthorised chemicals on grains was harmful to the human health and ,therefore, urged them to always use NAFDAC approved chemicals.

He said the agency had made available a list of approved chemicals for the preservation of grains which include: phostoxin tablet, two per cent of Actellic dust and 25 per cent of Actellic liquid.

According to him, the state unit has carried out sensitisation to enlighten the dealers on how to preserve their grains using these chemicals.
He also advised members of the public to only apply the traditional methods of grains’ preservation using the provided government silos or air-tight containers.

"The agency has earlier provided grains’ dealers with the names of the approved agro-allied chemicals that should be applied on grains.

"People should go back to the traditional method of preserving foodstuffs using government silos and air-tight containers.

"This will save the lives of consumers because it has be done the natural way, '' he said.
