The International Labour Organisation (ILO) stated that at least 36% of young and developing countries of the world live in extreme poverty, with a daily wage of below US$ 3.10 purchasing power parity (PPP).
ILO used the currently available statistics in its recently published report on World Employment and Social Outlook (WESO) 2016 – Transforming jobs to end poverty. The finding shows that about US$ 600 billion is needed annually or almost US$ 10 trillion in total in the next 15 years to come is needed to eradicate extreme2 and moderate3 poverty worldwide by 2030.
While explaining further, ILO stressed that the global deficit in job quality and receding economic situations in a large number of parts of the world is a threat to several years of growth and development, as well as stemming out extreme poverty.
The report summarised that the challenge of unending poverty will not be solved by income transfers alone; but more and better jobs are vital to achieving this objective.
