Saraki explains why he purchase of N330m cars

Bukola Saraki's cars

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has defended the acquisition of his official cars valued at N330m.

In a statement by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity),Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki explained why office recently took delivery of the cars.
Saraki explained that only the 2016 model Mercedes Benz S550 valued at over N49m was changed while the cars in his  convoy were inherited from his predecessor.
The statement reads, “Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has said only his official vehicle, a Mercedez Benz, was changed and that the spare car in the convoy is the old one he inherited and has been using since he assumed office June last year.
'It is an obvious fact that the official and spare cars that the Senate President inherited and has been using are old and have been malfunctioning. There are instances like the day Dr. Saraki visited Keffi for the marriage of the daughter of SenatorAbdullahi Adamu and another day at the Presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport that the spare vehicle broke down.
'In both instances, the spare vehicle did not return home with the convoy. The same vehicle had malfunctioned at the Presidential Villa and National Mosque on different occasions. It is for this reason that the Senate President approved that instead of providing two vehicles for him as he is entitled, only one should be bought to replace the official vehicle while the old official car should be converted to spare car.
'Also, if the National Assembly Management chose to provide operational vehicles for Security Agencies, should that be presented as if they are personal or official vehicles meant for the use of Dr. Saraki? These are vehicles that cannot be used for other purposes and by other people. The Senate President also have no control over the security vehicles,' he said.
Continuing, Olaniyonu said, 'it is also surprising that despite the fact that Premium Times in the same story reported that the order for the vehicle was made in December, it chose to calculate the value of the vehicles based on current exchange rate of the Naira to the dollar. This is obviously a mischief aimed at making the figure look huge and justify the screaming headline.
'The press should avoid deliberately inciting members of the public against public officials. The Senate President and his colleagues are conscious of the economic situation in the country and will continue to act responsibly and responsively.
'Just last week, Dr. Saraki was informed that the Ministry of FCT in its 2016 budget proposed a N6 billion estimate for the construction of the official residence of the Senate President. He outrightly rejected the proposal and directed Senator Dino Melaye, Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT to bring down the cost to one billion Naira. He said that it should be made known to the Ministry that if it cannot construct the building with N1 billion then they should leave out the project entirely till after his tenure. He said he will rather stay in his present abode. Senator Melaye had already acted as instructed as indicated in the report his committee presented to the Appropriation Committee.
'It should therefore be noted that if Dr. Saraki can demonstrate frugality and responsible leadership in a matter that saved the country so much money, how can it then be presented as if purchase of cars is a big issue that he cares so much about? Those who know the antecedent of the Senate President know that there is no type of vehicle that can excite him at this stage in his life,” Olaniyonu wrote.

In Borno: Army re-opens highways after 3 years

Troops rescue 195 captives in Borno.

The Nigerian Army announced on Saturday that it had re-opened all major highways linking Maiduguri, Borno, with other parts of the country after being shot for about three years due to suspected Boko Haram terrorist attacks.

Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), announced this at the launch of Army Combat Motor Bikes in Damboa, headquarters of Damboa local government area of the state.
Buratai said that the army will work towards securing the lives and properties of motorists plying the roads.
``From today the road - Maiduguri-Damboa and Damboa-Biu highway will be opened.
``The road is going to be entrusted into the hands of the Brigade Commander of the 25 Task Force Brigade,'' he said.
Buratai added: ``I do not want to hear any case of attack on innocent civilians or motorists on the road henceforth.
``Our troops will be on alert 24 hours to ensure that the road is kept open.’’
He said that the Nigerian Army had also re-opened other highways, including the Maiduguri-Bama, the Maiduguri-Mafa-Dikwa-Gamboru/Ngala roads, among others.
``All other major roads have been re-opened to motorists in the state.
``We are deliberate in ensuring that the roads are opened and the people that ply the roads and indeed the residents are safe.
``Those who left should come back, I know that the Borno State Government is doing something and the Federal Government is doing something too on the issue,'' Buratai said.
He explained that the launch of the Motor Bikes was aimed at beefing up security on the highways to prevent attacks on innocent persons.
``I am here to formally launch the Motor Bike Battalion of the Nigerian Army, we see it as a first multiplier to the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists.
``We intend to use the Motor Bikes effectively to ensure that our roads are kept safe and the terrorists are pursued anywhere they go,'' Buratai said.
He added that the Motor Bikes were fitted with fire power and communication gadget for effectiveness.
``This is a first multiplier with added fire power with the speed as well as the communication that is being added to the bikes.
``The reach of these Motor Bikes will be a very important element in ensuring that our troops maintain the initiatives and continue the exploit what they have so far achieved,'' Buratai said.
``So as the roads are re-opened now people should be able to move freely and we will do our job to ensure that they are secured.''
Buratai also launched the posters of the second batch of the Boko Haram most wanted terrorists.
``We are also launching the second batch of Boko Haram most wanted terrorists on our list.
``The choice of Damboa is not by accident; it is deliberate knowing the centrality of Damboa in this operation,'' he said.
``The vigilantes here will play important role in identifying these terrorists.
``We will send the posters across the country to ensure that those that have run away will be fish out.
``We call on the public to look at the posters carefully, identify and report any person they can recognise and report accordingly.
``We want to appreciate the support of the public, indeed all Nigerians, because we received tremendous support in the first set of 100 pictures and many of them had been identified and arrested.
``Although we are still pursing some of them we call on all Nigerians to support us by identifying these terrorists on these posters,'' he urged.

Anambra State Gov. Obiano adopts new technology for long lasting roads

Anambra state Governor, Willie Obiano

The Anambra government is currently experimenting with a new technology that will lead to the construction of longer lasting roads in the state.
Gov. Willie Obiano made the disclosure on Saturday at a demonstration of the use of the technology on a short road linking the state secretariat complex to Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
He said that the new technology was expected to boost his administration’s effort at finding a lasting solution to the challenge of constructing durable roads.
``We just want to experiment with this short and busy road and see how it can withstand heavy traffic before we can begin to adopt it for internal roads within the urban and non-urban areas,” he said.
The governor explained that after the experiment, the road would be placed under close observation for six months to see whether it would withstand heavy traffic.
``And if, eventually, we are convinced that such is the case, then we will begin to apply the technology in the construction of roads in the hinterland and other areas,” Obiano assured.
He said that the test being done on the short stretch of road was at no extra cost to the state government.
Mr Telforn Soden, representing West Incorporate; the owners of the technology, said that the product was a road stabiliser which had been in use in many parts of the world.
``We built roads in South Africa that have been there for 25 years. All that may be required is just resurfacing.
``We have built roads in Turkey, Sudan, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia and many parts of eastern Europe,” he said.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Works, Chief Law Chinwuba had said that the new technology was expected to drive down the cost of constructing roads in the state by 50 per cent.
He said that the state government decided to adopt the technology as part of fulfilling its mantra of doing-more-with-less cost.
``Anambra has the best network of roads in the country but what the state has to figure out is the way to maintain the roads.’’
Chinwuba commended the governor for funding the purchase of new road maintenance equipment up to the tune of N100 million.
He said that road maintenance teams were currently deployed across the three senatorial zones where they were patching up all broken roads and filling potholes.

NSCDC: Security agency wants partnership with Russia

Civil Defence Corps

Alhaji Abdullahi Gana, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has urged the Russian Embassy to grant technical assistance to the corps.

A statement by the spokesman of the corps, Emmanuel Okeh, reported that Abdullahi made the call during a courtesy visit to the Russian envoy, Mr Nikolay Udovichenko, in Abuja.
He called for mutual cooperation between the organisations, to further strengthen the bilateral relations between Nigeria and Russia.
Gana stressed that a mutual cooperation with Russia was necessary as the corps needed operational equipment that would enable the NSCDC to attain greater heights in fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
"We are delighted to seek bilateral relations with EMERCOM as the facilities needed will boost our efforts in the discharge of our duties and will greatly enhance our personnel human capacity."
EMERCON is the Russian Ministry of Civil Defence.
Gana said the needed assistance would lead to the provision of facilities that would assist in disaster management, especially in the areas of rescue operations.
Surveillance apparatus should also be provided to aid in monitoring of oil pipelines, critical infrastructure and other national assets in difficult terrains in the country, he said.
Responding, Udovichenko said the existing mutual relationship between Nigeria and Russia should continue.
The envoy said his country would work closely with the NSCDC to realise its mandate through its Ministry of Civil Defence.
He invited the corps boss to visit Russia to expedite the process of receiving technical assistance requested by the NSCDC.
He also pledged his country's readiness to assist in the training of the officers and men of the NSCDC in the areas of capacity building.

Osinbajo: VP says FG hasn't built a road in 10 years

Yemi Osinbajo

Nigerian Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has revealed that the Federal Government has not constructed a single road in the last 10 years.

The Vice President made this revelation while speaking at the pastors and leaders retreat of the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos in Lagos on Friday, February 26, 2016.
“Unless we tackle graft, we may not be able to achieve something,” he said.
'The federal government in the past 10 years could not build a single new road, not repairing existing ones alone.
'Now we have a president who will not steal money and who will not allow anybody to steal money," he said.

Dasuki: 'Buhari behind my continued detention,' says ex-NSA

Sambo Dasuki

The former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for his arrest and detention without trial, Premium Times reports

Dasuki, who has been detained since December 29, 2015, is accused of diverting $2.1billion meant for the procurement of arms for the Nigerian military for then fight Boko Haram terrorists.
Speaking through his counsel, Joseph Daudu, today, February 26, at the Abuja High Court, the former NSA said Buhari instigated his detention unjustly against the bail granted him by three different courts, through his comment during a presidential media chat in December 2015.
According to an affidavit filed in support of his application at the court, Dasuki said Buhari betrayed his emotions during the media chat when he openly told Nigerians that he (Dasuki) and Nnamdi Kanu, the pro-Biafra leader, could not be released on bail because they would jump bail.
He said since his re-arrest, he has been allowed to communicate with the outside world.
The former security chief therefore asked Justice Peter Affen to disallow his further trial until the federal government purged itself of the contempt of court which prevented him from filing effective defence because of his continued detention by the State Security Service, SSS, without having access to his lawyers.
In a counter response, the Federal Government counsel, Rotimi Jacob told Justice Affen that the charge against Mr. Dasuki is at the instance of the EFCC and not the SSS.
Jacob dismissed Dasuki's claim that his detention is illegal, explaining that when his bail conditions were perfected on December 29, 2015, he was released by from prison Kuje prison, but was rearrested by another government agency.
The lawyer urged the court not to grant Dasuki’s application because the SSS that rearrested him was not a party to the charges before Justice Affen who granted him the bail.
Justice Affen fixed March 4, 2016, to rule on the application.

EFCC says Olisa Metuh named ex-president in torn statement

Goodluck Jonathan

A staff of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has told a court that a written statement allegedly volunteered by the spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Olisa Metuh, was destroyed by Mr. Metuh partly because it made references to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Junaid Said told the court that Mr. Metuh admitted in the statement that he received N400 million arms money and used the sum for political activities and his personal needs, and made references to Mr. Jonathan.
The EFCC on Friday amended its charge of “destruction of evidence” against Mr. Metuh, the Peoples Democratic Party National Publicity Secretary.
The charge was amended at the resumption of the proceeding by the commission’s counsel, Sylvanus Tahir, at an FCT High Court presided over by Justice Ishaq Bello.
Mr. Tahir said the third-count of “Mischief” contravened Section 326 punishable under Section 327 of the Penal Code.
Testifying in the case, an EFCC witness, Junaid Said, told the court that Mr. Metuh tore the commission’s document.
Mr. Said, a Special Task Force Team member of EFCC, led in evidence by Mr. Tahir, said that the team received a petition in January 2016.
He said that the petition was from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, which alleged that he transferred N400 million to Destra Investment Limited, a company owned by Metuh.
The EFCC witness said investigations revealed that the transfer was done without any contract approval.
He said the team visited the resident of Mr. Metuh at Prince and Princess Estate, Abuja, on Jan. 5 and invited him to the commission.
Mr. Said told the court that Mr. Metuh honoured the invitation and was interrogated by Ibrahim MusaMichael WetkasBello UmarDavid NkpeBello Adama and Eucharia Ibrahim.
The EFCC witness said the defendant volunteered a statement to the commission.
“My Lord, when he concluded writing his statement which was on four sheets of the EFCC statement form, I collected the statement and read over it, I then handed the statement over to my superiors Musa and Wetkas.
“When I was handing over the statement, the defendant said he was surprised that he had written that much and that he felt he had given too much information.
“Because of the comment, I was worried I gave him the statement sheets one after the other for endorsement,’’ the witness said.
He said Mr. Metuh endorsed the first and second sheet, but tore the third sheet.
The witness told the court that the third sheet was where Mr. Metuh disclosed that he received the money for PDP political activities, settle his personal needs and made reference to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“My lord, he suddenly tore the statement sheet into pieces, in great shock and surprise I stood up I asked him why he did what he did?
“He said he did that because he was no longer willing to give the information on that statement sheet.
“I then requested the pieces of the statement, he declined and attempted to put them in his pocket, I then cautioned him and told him to respect himself, he insisted that he was going to dispose the torn sheet.
“I persuaded him to handover the tore sheet and brought one plain paper before him, he poured the pieces on the plain sheet, my other colleagues were there looking at us in surprise as well.
“He furthered tore them into pieces, saying only in the movies would this be recovered.
“I poured the pieces in the commission’s transparent polythene bag for exhibit and made entry of the incident into the EFCC’s incident duty station diary as well as EFCC’s pocket notebook.
“Later, in the day he requested to make additional statement, which he made, wrote his name and signed but declined to make any other statement on the torn paper.’’
The EFCC’s incident duty station diary, EFCC’s pocket notebook and the tore pieces were tendered and admitted as exhibits.
Mr. Said admitted under cross examination by Onyechi Ikpeazu, Mr. Metuh’s counsel, that the issue of the torn sheet was not written in his statement.
Mr. Ikpeazu demanded for the witness statement, but the prosecuting counsel gave him a photocopy of the statement.
Mr. Tahir said the defendant should have served him with notice to produce the document.
Justice Bello said the matter could no longer proceed without the original copy of the witness statement.
“Documents must meet the status as required by the law, there must be a certified copy of your documents.
“It is a healthy practice to produce the documents in your custody, especially in a criminal trial,’’ the judge told EFCC before adjourning the case till March 16 for continuation.

EFCC to question Obanikoro, Mu’azu for receiving cars from ex-minister’s associate

Musiiliu Obanikoro

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to invite former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro for questioning over allegations that he received a car gift from Jide Omokore, an associate of former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The EFCC will also expectedly interrogate former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu on the same charges, Punch reports.
“Some of the vehicles were given to Secondus but other PDP leaders received the vehicles, which were mostly Sport Utility Vehicles. We were told that Obanikoro received five of such vehicles,” a source told Punch.
“Mu’azu’s name has also been mentioned in the car issue but he has been out of the country for some months and we cannot get him now.
“Obanikoro and members of his family have been out of the country since last year but we hear he goes to Ghana and returns to the US. The two of them, Muazu and Obanikoro, are needed to make clarifications on the cars,” the source added.
The EFCC has also arrested PDP Deputy National ChairmanUche Secondus for allegedly collecting 23 vehicles worth N310 million from Omokore.

US to send special agents to help Nigeria fight sect

Boko Haram terrorists

The United State of America is set to boost Nigeria’s fight against terrorist groupBoko Haram by sending special agents to the frontline of the battle, reports say.

According to the New York Times, the Pentagon is planning to send dozens of Special Operations advisers to help in combating the sect.
The NY Times reports further that the deployment of the US agents is a main recommendation of a recent confidential assessment by the top United States Special Operations commander for Africa, Brig. Gen. Donald C. Bolduc.
The Americans will however only serve in non-combat advisory roles if the proposition is approved.
Boko Haram has been ranked as the world’s deadliest terrorist group by the Global Terrorism Index.
President Muhammadu Buhari had promised upon assumption of office to treat the insurgency as a priority and recently said that Boko Haram had been technically defeated by Nigerian troops.

Mum kills her baby because of the resemblance to her lover

27-year-old Elena Smocot who was married was with her two children and her seven-year-old nephew in Barlad, Romania, when she noticed the striking resemblance between her new born baby boy and her lover.
When she realized that her husband wasn’t the father of her newborn baby, she picked the infant up by his legs and swung him several times, repeatedly hitting his head against a furniture until the baby stopped crying.

She then took her son outside, put him on the ground, and began to stomp on him repeatedly.
Her four-year-old son and nephew heard the noises and ran outside, where they saw what Smocot was doing and ran to a neighbors’ house to tell them what she was doing.

However, by the time they returned with neighbors and police, Smocot had used a broken roof tile and cut the infant in half with it. After she cut the infant up, she pulled out his intestines, put his body parts in the bathtub, and took a shower with them.

Smocot was promptly arrested and charged with killing her baby in front of her four-year-old son and her nephew, aged seven.

She told police that removing the child’s intestines had been difficult, and that it was easier removing a chicken’s intenstines than her son's. She unemotionally told the Police that she had to pull twice to get her son's intestines out and had to repeatedly chop at the corpse.

She told police that her horrific actions were triggered by observing how her newborn son bore a striking resemblance to the man she’d been having an affair with.

In court, evidence was presented that Smocot may been experiencing severe depression, adding that in both 2010 and 2012 she had suffered from postnatal depression but the court rejected that plea stating that she knew what she was doing when she tortured and killed the innocent child.

.The court ruled that despite the possibility of postnatal depression, she was aware of her actions, thus guilty of murder.

Smocot has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

University of Ibadan Expels 97 Students

The University of Ibadan has expelled 97 students for extremely poor performance in their academics. PUNCH reports that the students failed to achieve the minimum requirement at the end of the 2015/16 academic session.

In a statement released by the university’s Registrar, Olujimi Olukoya, three of the students dropped out, while others affected were in different levels in seven different faculties. And this includes final year students.

“The Senate, at its meeting of Monday, February 1, 2016, approved that the candidates should withdraw from the university for failure to obtain the minimum academic requirements at the end of the 2014/2015 session,” the statement said.

However, the university has been ranked as the best in the country, with the University of Lagos coming second.

“Being number one in Nigeria and number one in West Africa should not be taken for granted,” the Vice-Chancellor of UI, Prof Abel Olayinka, said. “The real challenge is for us to be ranked among the top five in Africa in the next few years. This is possible given the pedigree of Ibadan over the last 68 years.”

“As we speak, we have perhaps the most highly developed postgraduate school, with easily the largest number of Master’s and Doctoral students in sub-Saharan Africa. The UI School of Business has been approved by the NUC and it is set to take off soon with her flagship MBA programme, which used to be run by our Department of Economics.

“The UI Research Foundation, set up by the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof Isaac Adewole, to reposition research activities in this institution, is perhaps the first of its type in Africa,” he concluded.

Supreme Court to decides Reverend King's fate today

The fate of Senior Pastor of the Christian Praying Assembly, Lagos, Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo aka Reverend King, will be known today February 26th, as the Supreme Court would decide whether he should be hanged for murder or spend a few more years in jail.

Reverend King was charged to court by the Lagos state government on September 26th 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder of one of his members, Ann Uzoh on August 2nd 2006.

Justice Joseph Oyewole of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja had on January 11th 2007 sentenced him to death by hanging for the murder of Ann Uzoh. The controversial pastor approached the Lagos state Court of Appeal but his appeal was thrown out and the High courts verdict upheld.

Dissatisfied with the Court of Appeals verdict, Reverend King approached the Supreme court, asking for the verdict to be upturned. The Apex court is expected to give its ruling this morning.

Super Eagles Coach, Sunday Oliseh, Resigns

I think Sunday Oliseh is an insecure man who lacks 'emotional maturity' to manage people. The controversial coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles has resigned, about seven months after he was appointed.

Oliseh, who announced his resignation on Twitter, said he took the decision due to the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to honour the terms of his contract.

His exact words: “Due to contract violations, lack of support, unpaid wages, benefits to my players, assistant coaches and myself, I resign as Super Eagles Chief Coach.”

He thanked Nigerians for the opportunity of serving as the coach of the team in a preceding tweet: “I feel fortunate, blessed and eternally grateful for having the honour to play, captain and coach this great nation of ours, Nigeria.”

Oliseh, whose appointment was made with much fanfare by the NFF, soon started having problems with the executives of the federation over remuneration, match tactics and results.

He also had challenges managing the players. An altercation between the coach and the team’s former captain and the country’s most capped goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, led to the goalie’s premature resignation from the team last October.

Apparently, the last straw for Oliseh was the woeful outing of the Super Eagles at the CHAN competition in Rwanda, where the team were eliminated in the first round.

His video outburst where Oliseh said his critics her "mad" has nailed him. NFF, please get someone better!
